The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't noted in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is probable that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it was situated where the parish church now stands. An additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely covered by the sea, approximately 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was eventually wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained throughout the generations predominantly through the ability of its fishermen, a business that thrived up until the 1960's as fish numbers went into decline. As well as the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishermen had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly risky sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were usually operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, which permitted powered lifeboats to replace rowed craft.

The tourist industry commenced in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was famous for its clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to the town in the 1870s, driving lots more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. A second station linking it to the East Midlands opened roughly ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th C, and it was reconstructed during the 1800s and at this time boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
