The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, nonetheless there were certainly Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is certainly likely that the village identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, considering that it was located where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A second settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally covered by the sea, approximately 400m from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself long ago was positioned some way inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly demolished by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially through the centuries mainly by the ability of its fishing fleet, a business which prospered up until the 1960's as stocks of fish declined. Besides lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The all too often severe sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were in most cases manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered boats.

The holiday industry started in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and it was renowned for the clean air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to the town in the 1870s, driving more and more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional station to the East Midlands opened roughly 10 years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, although it was reconstructed during the 19th century and today has the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
