The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that it is not disputed that there were Saxon communites around the area, it is certainly likely that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it was placed where the parish church now stands. Another village recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely swallowed by the sea, about 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer long ago was situated some way inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained economically across the decades primarily through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business which flourished up until the 60's at which time stocks of fish declined. As well as the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were almost entirely crewed by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed lifeboats.

Tourism began in Cromer in the early 19th century, and it was acknowledged for its clean air and restorative bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in 1877, bringing an ever-increasing amount of visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional railway station connecting it to the East Midlands opened roughly ten years later.
