The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Set on the north coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has long been a favoured holiday destination. Equally famous for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a leading source of income for its local fishermen since early days.

The town today has a population of about seven thousand seven hundred inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not noted in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements in the area, it is plausible that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it was situated where the parish church now lies. Another village recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely under the sea, about 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer at one time was situated some distance inland, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly destroyed by the ocean during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived economically over the ages mainly through the activity of its fishermen, an industry which did well up to the 60's when fish stocks diminished. As well as the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The regularly treacherous sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed craft.

The holiday industry started out in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and it was renowned for its pure air and health enhancing bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in the 1870s, bringing more and more people to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional train station to the East Midlands was unveiled roughly a decade later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th C, although was reconstructed in the Nineteenth century and at present has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
