The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Situated on the north coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a favourite holiday destination ever since the nineteenth century. Furthermore renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been an important income for its local fishermen throughout the generations.

Cromer these days has a population of about seven thousand seven hundred occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if it is acknowledged that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the area, it is conceivable that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it was situated where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. Another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely swallowed by the ocean, about 400m from the pier.

Cromer long ago stood inland, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the ocean in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived through the decades mainly due to the skill of its fishing fleet, a business which prospered up until the 60's at which time fish stocks went into decline. Besides the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly severe conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were largely manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered vessels.

Tourism started out in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and it was renowned for its pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in the town in the 1870s, delivering an increasing quantity of travellers to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. The second station to the East Midlands opened up roughly 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, though it was rebuilt in the 19th century and now has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
