Cromer Norfolk: Lying on the north sea coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a well liked vacation hotspot ever since the 19th century. Likewise famous as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a substantial income source for its fishermen for many centuries.

The town currently has a population of roughly 7,700 occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the Domesday Book (1086), nonetheless there were certainly Saxon settlements in the area, it is quite possible that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it stood where the parish church now stands. One additional village outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely under the sea, about 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time stood some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived financially over the centuries principally by the activities of its fishermen, an industry which flourished up to the nineteen sixties when stocks of fish dropped. In addition to the the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were being engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were commonly operated by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed craft.

Tourism started out in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was recognized for the clean air and restorative bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to the town in 1877, carrying increasing numbers of visitors to the town and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An extra station linking it to the East Midlands opened about ten years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church originally dates from the fourteenth century, but was reconstructed during the 19thC and today has got the tallest church tower in the county (160 feet).
