Cromer Norfolk: Sitting on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favoured holiday destination. Likewise respected as being a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a major income source for its local fishermen for many centuries.

The town at present has a population of about 7,700 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book (1086), though it is known that there were Saxon settlements around the area, it is conceivable that the community noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it sat where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. Another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally covered by the sea, roughly four hundred metres from the pier.

Cromer itself at one time sat inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has endured over the ages largely through the activity of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished until the nineteen sixties as stocks of fish went into decline. As well as the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The regularly treacherous conditions off the coast of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were routinely operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed craft.

The tourist industry started out in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was celebrated for its pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving more and more tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. Another station linking it to the East Midlands opened around 10 years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th century, though it was rebuilt during the 19th century and at this time boasts the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
