Cromer once upon a time stood from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little demolished by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has managed financially throughout the years mostly by the ability of its fishing fleet, a business which flourished up until the nineteen sixties at which time stocks of fish decreased. In addition to the lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often dangerous conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were routinely operated by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, which allowed lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously rowed lifeboats.

Tourism started off in Cromer early in the 1800s, and it was renowned for its pure air and health improving sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to Cromer in the 1870s, carrying more and more travellers to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. A 2nd station to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately a decade later.
