The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Standing on the northern coastline of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has long been a favoured holiday destination. Likewise known as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a significant income for the local fishermen through the centuries.

Cromer these days has a population of just under 8,000 residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is strange that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the region, it is certainly likely that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it stood where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. A second settlement documented in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely swallowed by the sea, approximately 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time stood some way inland, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little destroyed by the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived across the centuries mostly through the prowess of its fishing fleet, an industry that flourished up to the 1960's when stocks of fish went into decline. Apart from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes severe sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were typically manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism developed in Cromer in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was acknowledged for its pure air and healthy bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, delivering growing amounts of travellers to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra station joining it to the East Midlands was opened about ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, though it was rebuilt in the 1800s and today has the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
