Cromer Norfolk: Set on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a popular holiday destination. Equally recognized as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing an important source of income for the fishermen for many centuries.

The town today has a population of just below eight thousand inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book (1086), even though there were certainly Anglo Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is quite possible that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it was located where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. An additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely under the sea, around 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally sat some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has endured financially across the years mainly through the ability of its fishing fleet, a business which flourished until the 60's when fish numbers declined. In addition to the the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally perilous conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were almost entirely operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed craft.

Tourism started in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and the town was famous for its clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to the town in eighteen seventy seven, drawing increasing amounts of travellers to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An alternate station linking it to the East Midlands opened up roughly ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th Cent, and it was rebuilt during the Nineteenth century and now boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
