The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is feasible that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, considering that it was located where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. A different village detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally under the sea, roughly four hundred meters to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself originally sat inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained over the years mostly due to the talent of its fishing fleet, an industry that did well up to the 1960's at which time fish numbers diminished. Besides lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes dangerous sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were most commonly operated by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed craft.

The tourist business started in the town in the early 1800s, and the town was acknowledged for the pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in Cromer in 1877, drawing a growing quantity of travellers to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. The second station to the East Midlands opened up around 10 years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th Cent, and it was rebuilt in the 19thC and presently boasts the highest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
