The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Found on the northern coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation hotspot ever since the nineteenth century. Equally well known for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a significant income source for its fishermen over the decades.

The town nowadays has a populace of just below eight thousand occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the Domesday Book (1086), although it is accepted that there were Anglo Saxon settlements in the region, it is likely that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it stood where the parish church now lies. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely covered by the sea, roughly four hundred metres from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time stood some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has managed financially over the ages for the most part due to the activity of its fishermen, an industry that did well up until the 60's when fish numbers declined. In addition to lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often dangerous conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were often crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed vessels.

Tourism started out in the town early in the 1800s, and it was acknowledged for the clean air and restorative bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, driving a growing quantity of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second railway station to the East Midlands opened up approximately ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th Cent, and it was reconstructed during the Nineteenth century and today has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
