The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Standing on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation destination ever since the nineteenth century. Equally famous for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a leading source of income for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town at this time has a population of just under 8,000 inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086, however there were certainly Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is conceivable that the community documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. A second settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely swallowed by the ocean, roughly 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time sat some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained throughout the years by and large due to the activities of its fishermen, an industry that flourished up until the nineteen sixties as fish numbers declined. Besides the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally dangerous conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were most commonly crewed by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, which allowed motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed craft.

The tourist industry started out in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and it was renowned for its clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, driving growing amounts of tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An alternate rail station linking it to the East Midlands opened up roughly ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th Cent, and it was reconstructed during the 19thC and presently has the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
