The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Sitting on the north sea coast of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has long been a favorite vacation spot. Likewise renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a significant income source for the local fishermen throughout the years.

The town nowadays has a populace of around 7,700 occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" was not identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes in the region, it is possible that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it stood where the parish church now lies. Yet another settlement recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely under the sea, approximately four hundred meters north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself at one time stood some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly demolished by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained across the ages by and large due to the activities of its fishermen, an industry that thrived up until the 1960's at which time fish numbers went into decline. In addition to the the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally hazardous conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were regularly manned by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed lifeboats.

Tourism developed in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was celebrated for the pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to Cromer in 1877, drawing lots more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional railway station to the East Midlands opened up around 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church first dates from the 14th Cent, but was reconstructed during the Nineteenth century and at present boasts the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
