The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though there certainly would have been Saxon settlements around the area, it is very likely that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it was situated where the parish church now stands. One additional village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely swallowed by the sea, around four hundred meters from the pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has endured economically across the generations mainly through the competence of its fishermen, a business that flourished up to the 1960's when fish numbers diminished. In addition to the lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally hazardous conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were more often than not crewed by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered vessels.

The tourist business started off in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was recognized for the pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, delivering lots more people to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second station linking it to the East Midlands opened up around a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church originates from the fourteenth century, and it was remodelled in the 1800s and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
