Cromer Norfolk: Standing on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favoured holiday destination. Furthermore known as being a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a substantial income source for the local fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town at present has a populace of approximately eight thousand occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book (1086), even if it is undeniable that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the region, it is quite possible that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, given it was situated where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally covered by the sea, approximately four hundred metres to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally stood inland, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived throughout the decades predominantly by the expertise of its fishermen, a business which thrived up to the 60's at which time fish stocks went into decline. Aside from lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly severe sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were frequently crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered vessels.

The tourist industry developed in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was acknowledged for the pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, carrying an ever-increasing amount of visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional station joining it to the East Midlands opened about a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th Cent, but was rebuilt during the 19th century and now has the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
