The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Situated on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a favourite holiday destination. Equally recognized for being a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a substantial source of income for its fishermen since early times.

The town presently has a population of about seven thousand seven hundred residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though it is known that there were Saxon townships in the area, it is quite possible that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, considering that it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A different settlement noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally covered by the sea, around 400m from the pier.

Cromer itself long ago was positioned some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was eventually wiped out by the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived through the years primarily through the skill of its fishing fleet, a business which prospered until the nineteen sixties as fish numbers declined. Besides the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly severe sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were usually crewed by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, which allowed powered lifeboats to replace rowed lifeboats.

The holiday industry started in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for the clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, delivering an ever-increasing quantity of people to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second station to the East Midlands opened up approximately 10 years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, although it was rebuilt in the 1800s and today has got the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
