The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Discovered on the north coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has long been a favoured vacation spot. Equally respected for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been an important source of income for the fishermen for many centuries.

The town presently has a population of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not listed in the Domesday Book (1086), although there were certainly Saxon communites around the area, it is probable that the community noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. A further settlement recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally under the sea, roughly 400 meters from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time sat some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived economically through the centuries predominantly due to the activity of its fishermen, a business that flourished until the 60's at which time fish numbers dropped. In addition to the lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly life-threatening conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were largely manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism began in Cromer in the early 19th century, and it was famous for the pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in the town in the 1870s, delivering lots more travellers to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional railway station to the East Midlands was opened around a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originally dates from the 14th century, and it was remodelled during the 1800s and currently boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
