The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, though there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is very likely that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish church now lies. A further village recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely covered by the sea, around 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was steadily wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially through the ages by and large by the activities of its fishermen, a business which did well up until the 60's at which time fish stocks diminished. In addition to the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often hazardous conditions off Norfolk's coast, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were mainly crewed by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

The tourism industry developed in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and the town was celebrated for its pure air and health improving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived at Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing an ever-increasing amount of tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. Another rail station to the East Midlands opened about a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul has its origin in the fourteenth century, though it was rebuilt during the Nineteenth century and now has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
