The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Located on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation destination since the 19th century. Equally renowned as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an important income for its fishermen throughout the decades.

Cromer presently has a population of just below eight thousand residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, however it is undeniable that there were Saxon townships in the area, it is feasible that the community registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it sat where the parish church now stands. One additional village outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely under the sea, roughly 400m from the pier.

Cromer itself long ago was positioned some distance inland, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was eventually demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has endured economically through the years largely due to the activity of its fishing fleet, an industry that prospered up until the 1960's when fish stocks dropped. Apart from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often treacherous conditions off Norfolk's coastline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were routinely manned by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

The tourist industry commenced in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for the pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to Cromer in the 1870s, driving an ever-increasing quantity of tourists to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional train station connecting it to the East Midlands was unveiled around 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th C, but was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and presently has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
