The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the Domesday Book (1086), even if it is known that there were Anglo Saxon settlements in the area, it is conceivable that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. Yet another settlement outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely swallowed by the sea, roughly 400 meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself originally sat some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived through the years principally through the ability of its fishermen, an industry that prospered up until the 60's when fish numbers decreased. In addition to lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically dangerous conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were predominately operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed lifeboats.

The tourism business began in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was celebrated for its clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to the town in the 1870s, drawing lots more people to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second station to the East Midlands opened up approximately ten years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, although was reconstructed in the Nineteenth century and at the moment boasts the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
