The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Discovered on the north coast of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many decades been a popular vacation spot. Equally recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its lobsters and crabs, providing a major income for its fishermen since early days.

Cromer at this time has a populace of just under eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is quite possible that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, considering that it sat where the parish church now stands. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally covered by the sea, around four hundred meters from Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time sat inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was steadily wiped out by the ocean in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed economically over the years for the most part through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that prospered until the 60's as fish numbers declined. In addition to the the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The routinely perilous conditions off Norfolk's coast, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were mainly operated by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, which permitted motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed vessels.

The holiday business started out in the town early in the 1800s, and the town was recognized for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to the town in the 1870s, bringing more and more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. Another station linking it to the East Midlands opened up about 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th Cent, and it was rebuilt during the Nineteenth century and now has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
