The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, although it is unquestionable that there were Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, considering that it sat where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. A second settlement recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely swallowed by the ocean, approximately 400 metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally stood some distance inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has managed across the centuries by and large due to the activities of its fishermen, a business that thrived up to the nineteen sixties when the numbers of fish went into decline. In addition to the lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's coast, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were predominately crewed by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace man-powered vessels.

Tourism commenced in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for the pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to the town in the 1870s, carrying an increasing number of people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional rail station joining it to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th century, but was rebuilt in the 19thC and at this time has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
