The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is quite possible that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now lies. An additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally covered by the sea, approximately four hundred metres north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer once upon a time sat some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically throughout the generations primarily through the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry which did well up to the nineteen sixties at which time fish numbers went into decline. As well as lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes hazardous sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were largely manned by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, which permitted lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered boats.

Tourism commenced in Cromer early in the 19th century, and it was acknowledged for its clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to Cromer in the 1870s, carrying growing numbers of travellers to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra railway station to the East Midlands opened about ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th century, although was reconstructed in the 19th century and today has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
