The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not quoted in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is incontestable that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the region, it is plausible that the community registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it was situated where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely covered by the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer long ago stood some distance inland, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived throughout the ages mostly through the activity of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished up to the nineteen sixties when the numbers of fish declined. Besides the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The quite often treacherous conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were normally crewed by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed lifeboats.

Tourism started off in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and it was renowned for the pure air and health enhancing bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at Cromer in 1877, carrying an increasing quantity of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up around ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th century, although was rebuilt in the 19thC and today has got the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
