The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Located on the north coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a well known holiday location since the nineteenth century. Equally well known for being a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a substantial source of income for its local fishermen over the decades.

The town nowadays has a populace of roughly 8,000 occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, although there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communites in the area, it is likely that the community registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, given it was placed where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A second village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely swallowed by the ocean, about 400 meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer once upon a time was situated some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has managed across the decades principally due to the activity of its fishing fleet, a business which prospered up to the 1960's as stocks of fish went into decline. As well as the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The all too often treacherous conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were typically crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed vessels.

Tourism began in the town early in the 1800s, and it was celebrated for its clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, drawing more and more tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An alternate station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up about ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, although was reconstructed during the 1800s and today has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
