The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Sitting on the north coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a favorite holiday hotspot ever since the nineteenth century. Furthermore known as a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an essential source of income for its fishermen for many centuries.

Cromer nowadays has a population of just below eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book of 1086, although there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is likely that the settlement documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it stood where the parish church now stands. An additional settlement detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely under the sea, approximately four hundred metres to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was positioned some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained through the generations largely through the ability of its fishing fleet, an industry that flourished up until the 60's as fish numbers declined. In addition to the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The all too often life-threatening sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were normally crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered vessels.

Tourism developed in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was celebrated for its clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to Cromer in the 1870s, driving a growing amount of visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. The second station linking it to the East Midlands opened roughly a decade after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originally dates from the 14th Cent, although it was reconstructed during the 19thC and presently boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
