Cromer Norfolk: Situated on the north coastline of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favoured holiday spot. Furthermore reputable as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a substantial income source for the fishermen for many generations.

Cromer nowadays has a populace of about eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" was not quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon encampments in the area, it is quite possible that the community documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it was situated where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. Yet another village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely swallowed by the ocean, approximately 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally sat some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived over the decades largely through the skill of its fishermen, a business which prospered until the nineteen sixties at which time fish stocks declined. Besides lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were being occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often perilous conditions off the coast of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were in most cases crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed lifeboats.

Tourism started off in the town early in the 19th century, and the town was renowned for the clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1877, driving growing numbers of visitors to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second station joining it to the East Midlands opened up about a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th century, although it was remodelled in the 19thC and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
