Cromer in Norfolk: Sitting on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a celebrated holiday hotspot ever since the 19th century. The town currently has a populace of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though there certainly would have been Saxon communes around the area, it is very likely that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now lies. A further village recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely covered by the sea, approximately four hundred meters north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally was positioned some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely wiped out by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived economically throughout the decades mainly due to the competence of its fishing fleet, an industry which prospered up to the 60's as stocks of fish went into decline. As well as lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally unsafe sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were frequently manned by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered vessels.

The holiday business started off in Cromer in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was famous for the clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was transformed into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to Cromer in 1877, drawing an ever-increasing amount of visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An alternate railway station linking it to the East Midlands was unveiled around 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th C, and it was rebuilt in the 1800s and today has the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
