Cromer in Norfolk: Sitting on the north sea coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a well known vacation hotspot since the nineteenth century. Also famous for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing a leading source of income for the fishermen since early days.

Cromer these days has a population of just below 8,000 occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" was not quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), even though it is likely that there were Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is likely that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, given it sat where the parish church now lies. Another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely covered by the sea, about 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally was situated inland, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly destroyed by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially through the decades principally by the talent of its fishermen, a business that prospered up until the 1960's as fish numbers went into decline. As well as the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often hazardous conditions off the coast of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were mostly operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered vessels.

Tourism began in the town in the early 1800s, and it was recognized for its clean air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing more and more travellers to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. Another railway station connecting it to the East Midlands was unveiled about 10 years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originally dates from the 14th century, although it was rebuilt in the 19thC and now has the tallest church tower in the county (160 feet).
