The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is strange that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, nonetheless it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes in the area, it is feasible that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now lies. A different settlement listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely covered by the sea, around 400 metres to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally sat some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained through the decades principally by the skill of its fishermen, an industry which prospered up until the 60's as the numbers of fish declined. Apart from lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically dangerous sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were predominately manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed craft.

The holiday business started out in Cromer in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was acknowledged for its clean air and health enhancing sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to the town in the 1870s, carrying growing amounts of tourists to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A 2nd rail station joining it to the East Midlands opened up around a decade later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th century, but was reconstructed during the 1800s and at present has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
