The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Discovered on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a celebrated holiday hotspot since the 1800s. In addition reputable as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a substantial income for the local fishermen since early days.

The town at this time has a populace of approximately 8,000 occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not noted in the 1086 Domesday Book, however it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is plausible that the community registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now stands. A different settlement recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely under the sea, around 400m from the pier.

Cromer itself long ago was situated some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was progressively eradicated by the ocean in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has managed over the generations mostly due to the talent of its fishing fleet, an industry which thrived up to the 1960's at which time fish stocks went into decline. Apart from lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The quite often hazardous sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were normally manned by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed boats.

Tourism started out in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was recognized for its clean air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to the town in 1877, delivering lots more travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate station to the East Midlands opened up roughly 10 years later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th Cent, although it was rebuilt in the 19thC and now has got the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
