Cromer in Norfolk: Situated on the north coastline of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a favourite holiday destination ever since the 1800s. Equally recognized as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a major income for its local fishermen since early times.

The town at this time has a population of about eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" wasn't noted in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon encampments around the area, it is plausible that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it sat where the parish church now lies. An additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely under the sea, about four hundred metres from the pier.

Cromer at one time sat inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived through the generations largely through the expertise of its fishing fleet, a business which thrived until the 1960's when stocks of fish dropped. As well as lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The all too often unsafe sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were often manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, which permitted lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered craft.

Tourism developed in the town in the early nineteenth century, and the town was recognized for its pure air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to the town in eighteen seventy seven, bringing more and more visitors to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. An extra station joining it to the East Midlands opened about ten years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th C, but was reconstructed in the Nineteenth century and today boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
