The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Standing on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a favourite vacation hotspot ever since the 19th century. Equally reputable as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an essential income for the fishermen for many centuries.

The town these days has a populace of approximately 8,000 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, though there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is possible that the village registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A second settlement identified in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely under the sea, roughly four hundred metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time was situated some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was steadily demolished by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially across the centuries for the most part due to the competence of its fishermen, an industry which did well until the 1960's as the numbers of fish declined. Apart from the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet were being engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes treacherous conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were essentially operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed craft.

Tourism started out in Cromer in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for its clean air and healthy bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1877, drawing a growing number of tourists to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. An alternate station linking it to the East Midlands opened about a decade after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church originally dates from the 14th Cent, although was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and at this time has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
