The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Set on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a favourite holiday hotspot ever since the 1800s. Furthermore known as a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a vital income source for the fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if it is a fact that there were Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is feasible that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it stood where the parish church now stands. One additional village posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally under the sea, around 400m from the pier.

Cromer at one time sat some way inland, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually destroyed by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has endured economically throughout the centuries predominantly through the skill of its fishing fleet, an industry which did well up until the nineteen sixties at which time fish numbers decreased. Aside from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often severe conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were essentially operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism commenced in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was famed for the pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, carrying an ever-increasing number of travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second station connecting it to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th century, although it was rebuilt in the 1800s and today boasts the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
