Cromer Norfolk: Situated on the northern coastline of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a fashionable holiday destination. Also famous as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a substantial income source for the fishermen since early days.

The town nowadays has a population of about 7,700 residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is strange that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though it is certain that there were Anglo Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is quite possible that the settlement documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now stands. Yet another village recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely under the sea, about 400 meters to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time stood inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually eradicated by the ocean in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived financially throughout the ages for the most part through the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished until the nineteen sixties as fish numbers went into decline. Besides the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes unsafe conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were by and large manned by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed boats.

Tourism started out in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was famed for the clean air and health giving bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, bringing a growing number of people to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional station joining it to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originates from the fourteenth century, and it was rebuilt in the 19thC and at this time has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
