The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is strange that the name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that there certainly would have been Saxon communes in the region, it is certainly likely that the community registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely swallowed by the sea, about 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer originally sat inland, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained financially through the decades largely through the competence of its fishing fleet, a business that did well up until the nineteen sixties as fish numbers declined. Apart from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally treacherous sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were typically manned by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to replace man-powered craft.

The holiday business developed in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was famed for the pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in the 1870s, carrying lots more travellers to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A 2nd station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up around 10 years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, although it was rebuilt during the 19thC and now has got the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
