The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Sitting on the north coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a fashionable holiday destination. Additionally well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its lobsters and crabs, providing a major income for the fishermen since early days.

The town currently has a population of just below 8,000 residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086, although it is not disputed that there were Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is possible that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it sat where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely covered by the sea, about 400 metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally was situated from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was steadily destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically across the centuries principally by the activities of its fishermen, an industry that prospered until the 1960's at which time fish numbers went into decline. Apart from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally hazardous conditions off the coast of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were most commonly manned by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, which permitted motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed vessels.

The tourist industry started out in the town early in the 1800s, and it was famed for the pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to Cromer in the 1870s, drawing growing amounts of people to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A second station to the East Midlands opened up around ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originates from the fourteenth century, and it was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and at this time has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
