Cromer Norfolk: Discovered on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has for many years been a favoured vacation destination. Likewise recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an essential source of income for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town at present has a populace of just below 8,000 residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), however it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes around the area, it is conceivable that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it was located where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now stands. A second settlement detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely swallowed by the ocean, roughly four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time stood some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived across the ages principally through the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry which thrived up to the 60's as stocks of fish declined. In addition to the lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically hazardous conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were almost entirely operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed lifeboats.

The tourist industry started out in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was celebrated for its clean air and health improving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to the town in the 1870s, carrying more and more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. The second station to the East Midlands opened up roughly 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, although was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and now has got the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
