The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is feasible that the village identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it sat where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. An additional settlement posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely under the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer long ago stood some distance inland, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time destroyed by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained across the generations mostly through the talent of its fishing fleet, an industry that flourished up until the 1960's as stocks of fish declined. In addition to the the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly perilous sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were most commonly operated by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed lifeboats.

Tourism commenced in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was famed for the pure air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in the town in the 1870s, carrying more and more people to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. An additional station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened around ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th C, though it was rebuilt in the 1800s and currently has got the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
