The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Set on the northern coast of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a celebrated vacation spot since the 19th century. Likewise well known for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, providing a vital income for the local fishermen since early times.

Cromer at this time has a populace of just below eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), though there were certainly Saxon communites in the area, it is probable that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, as it stood where the parish church now stands. Yet another settlement recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely under the sea, roughly 400m from Cromer's pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely wiped out by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has survived over the decades for the most part through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that did well up until the nineteen sixties as the numbers of fish went into decline. Apart from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes treacherous sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were predominantly manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed vessels.

The tourist business started out in the town early in the nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for the pure air and health improving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in 1877, carrying lots more visitors to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. Another train station connecting it to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th C, and it was reconstructed during the Nineteenth century and at the moment has the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
