Cromer in Norfolk: Sitting on the north coast of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favorite holiday spot. Furthermore recognized as being a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a major source of income for the local fishermen since early times.

The town these days has a population of around eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, although it is recognized that there were Saxon settlements in the area, it is quite possible that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it stood where the parish church now lies. An additional village documented in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely swallowed by the ocean, about four hundred meters north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself originally was situated some distance inland, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived financially throughout the generations for the most part due to the prowess of its fishermen, a business which flourished up to the 60's as the numbers of fish declined. In addition to lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically hazardous sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were mostly operated by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace man-powered craft.

Tourism began in Cromer in the early 1800s, and the town was famous for the pure air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to the town in the 1870s, carrying lots more people to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. A 2nd railway station linking it to the East Midlands opened roughly ten years after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church originally dates from the 14th century, but was reconstructed during the 19thC and at present has the tallest church tower in the county (160 feet).
