The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Lying on the north coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favourite vacation spot. Furthermore recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its crabs and lobsters, providing a leading source of income for the fishermen since early times.

The town these days has a population of just under 8,000 residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, though there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is probable that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, as it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. A different settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely covered by the sea, around 400 metres north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer long ago was situated inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was over time eradicated by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived across the ages predominantly through the expertise of its fishermen, a business that prospered up until the 1960's at which time fish stocks went into decline. Apart from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally severe conditions off the coast of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were mainly operated by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered craft.

The holiday business started off in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for its pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to Cromer in the 1870s, drawing lots more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate station linking it to the East Midlands opened up roughly a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th century, but was remodelled during the 19thC and today boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
