The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that there were certainly Saxon encampments around the area, it is very likely that the community noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely swallowed by the ocean, approximately 400 metres to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer at one time was situated inland, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was eventually wiped out by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has survived throughout the generations largely due to the skill of its fishing fleet, an industry which thrived until the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish declined. In addition to the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were predominantly operated by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, which allowed lifeboats powered by motor to replace man-powered boats.

Tourism started in the town in the early 1800s, and the town was famed for its pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving growing numbers of tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. The second rail station to the East Midlands opened around ten years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church originally dates from the 14th Cent, though it was reconstructed during the 19thC and today boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
