A further village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely covered by the sea, about 400 meters north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was positioned some way inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has endured economically through the years mainly by the activities of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up to the 1960's as fish numbers went into decline. As well as lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically risky sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were most commonly operated by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed vessels.

The tourism business started off in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and the town was celebrated for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to Cromer in 1877, driving growing amounts of visitors to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. Another station to the East Midlands opened roughly 10 years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the fourteenth century, although it was rebuilt during the 19thC and today has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
