Cromer once upon a time was situated some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely demolished by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has survived economically through the generations predominantly through the ability of its fishermen, a business which flourished up to the 60's at which time the numbers of fish went into decline. Aside from lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were being occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly risky sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were often operated by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed craft.

The tourism industry started off in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was renowned for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying lots more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An extra train station to the East Midlands was opened roughly 10 years later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th Cent, although it was rebuilt in the 1800s and today boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
