Cromer Norfolk: Lying on the north coast of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a favourite holiday location since the 1800s. Likewise known as being a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its lobsters and crabs, that have been an essential income for its local fishermen over the generations.

The town today has a populace of about 7,700 residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, although it is likely that there were Saxon townships in the region, it is most likely that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it sat where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. An additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely covered by the sea, roughly 400 meters to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer long ago was situated inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little destroyed by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived across the years principally by the talent of its fishing fleet, a business which thrived until the 1960's as stocks of fish went into decline. In addition to the the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The regularly risky conditions off Norfolk's coast, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were predominately operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed craft.

The tourism industry commenced in the town in the early 1800s, and the town was recognized for its pure air and restorative bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to Cromer in 1877, bringing growing amounts of visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A 2nd station to the East Midlands opened around 10 years later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the fourteenth century, although it was remodelled in the 19thC and presently has the tallest church tower in the county (160 feet).
