The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The History of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't noted in the Domesday Book of 1086, despite the fact that there were certainly Saxon communes around the area, it is possible that the community listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it was situated where the parish church now lies. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally covered by the sea, roughly four hundred metres to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually destroyed by the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained across the decades mainly through the ability of its fishermen, an industry which did well until the 60's as fish numbers decreased. Apart from lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently severe sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were commonly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed vessels.

The tourist industry developed in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and the town was renowned for the pure air and health enhancing bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at the town in 1877, drawing increasing amounts of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. The second rail station joining it to the East Midlands opened up roughly a decade later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, and it was reconstructed in the Nineteenth century and today has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
