The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Lying on the north coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has long been a popular holiday spot. In addition renowned for being a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a significant source of income for its fishermen over the decades.

The town at this time has a population of just under 8,000 residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is strange that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon encampments in the area, it is very likely that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, considering that it stood where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. Another village listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely under the sea, around four hundred meters from Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally stood some distance inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived throughout the ages largely through the prowess of its fishermen, a business that did well until the 60's as stocks of fish diminished. In addition to the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The quite often life-threatening sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were most commonly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered boats.

Tourism began in the town in the early 1800s, and it was renowned for its pure air and health improving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to the town in 1877, bringing increasing numbers of people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra station to the East Midlands opened up approximately ten years later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church first dates from the 14th C, although it was reconstructed in the Nineteenth century and today has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
