Cromer in Norfolk: Lying on the northern coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a well loved holiday spot ever since the nineteenth century. Equally famous as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing a vital income source for its local fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town at present has a population of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), though there were certainly Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is quite possible that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it was situated where the parish church now stands. One additional village outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally swallowed by the sea, about 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer once upon a time sat some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived economically through the years mostly by the expertise of its fishing fleet, a business which prospered up until the 60's at which time stocks of fish declined. In addition to the the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently perilous sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were oftentimes crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, which permitted lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed boats.

The tourism industry commenced in the town in the early 19th century, and it was renowned for its clean air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to the town in 1877, driving a growing quantity of people to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional station to the East Midlands was unveiled around 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the fourteenth century, although was remodelled during the 19thC and now has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
